Congratulations to the American Legion Post 731 for receiving the San Diego Unified School District Partner of the year award for 2012-2013!
The American Legion initially approached Chesterton Elementary School in 1996 and proposed a bike give-away (which also included a bicycle lock and helmet). The philosophy of the American Legion at that time was to reward students based on good citizenship and literacy skills.
Once a month Chesterton teachers are given the opportunity to submit the names of students based on the criteria and at the Student Recognition Assembly held at the end of every month two names are drawn - one from primary grades and the other from upper grades. The students receive the bikes at the next Student Recognition Assembly and the bike winners' parents are invited to attend.
During the 17 years of this unofficial partnership, the American Legion has donated 300+ bikes to Chesterton Students. members of the Legion not only raise the funding for the two bikes a month but also purchase the bikes which they try to make specific to the award winner. Their total time over the last 17 years is beyond any accounting process. Their unfailing support and dedication to the school and our students have been valuable incentive tools. Even more importantly, it is indicative of the value the Legion places on education and the students' learning process.
The American Legion Post 731 is certainly commended for its ongoing efforts and commitment to support Chesterton Elementary School. It has been an honor to be associated with such a dedicated group of community members who truly embody the spirit of volunteerism!
